Children Panel Solicitor – Southend on Sea BC

Southend on Sea Borough Council is looking for an additional Solicitor/Barrister/Legal Executive who is a member of the Law Society's Children Law Accreditation scheme.

The basic salary for this position will be £41,846-£48,508 pa. Southend on Sea Borough Council also offers a generous benefits package, including assistance with re-location if required.

Initial interview date is set for the 24th September, further interview dates to be arranged if required.

Job Description

The successful candidate will be required to :-

Act as an in-house child care advocate

Advise on all legal matters as requested by the Council's Children's and Learning Services; ensuring that their decisions are legally sound and that these achieve the aims  and objectives of that service.

Ensure that litigation is dealt with efficiently and cost effectively achieving the purposes of our client in each case.

Travel either routinely or as an integral part of the role.

The role demands a clear understanding of the legal framework within which the Council and its partners operate with a depth and breadth of experience necessary to apply proactive solutions in supporting the Council's Children's and Learning Services.

Person Specification

The appointed candidate will need to be a qualified skilled experienced solicitor, legal executive or barrister who is fully conversant with all aspects of children law, practice and procedure; who demonstrates transferable skills and the ability to become competent in other areas of law such as education and judicial review.

Candidates must have experience in acting on behalf of Local Authorities in Family Proceedings

You will need to have substantial knowledge of the Children Act, Adoption and wider aspects of children law

Candidates must possess a proven ability to manage cases before the Family Court and the High Court

Candidates must have experience as an advocate in hearings in relation to children and in dealing with complex and lengthy contentious hearings

You must be good at problem-solving and have the ability to use your own initiative

You must have a proven track record in achieving results and good outcomes for children

Credibility with senior management, the judiciary and other key stakeholders is essential.

Ability to contribute effectively in a small legal team within a large complex organisation with plans for radical change and improvement
