Cases handled by Forced Marriage Unit have trebled since 2005

Figures and new research released by DCSF

The Forced Marriage Unit dealt with 420 cases last year as compared with 152 cases in 2005 according to figures published by the DCSF.

The figures were released to coincide with new guidance as the Unit prepares for its busiest time of the year during the school summer holidays. At the same time, the DCSF also published a research report, Forced Marriage – Prevalence and Service Response, which estimated that the

"national prevalence of reported cases of forced marriage in England could be between 5,000 and 8,000. This is based on looking at the number of cases reported in 9 Local Authorities and then extrapolating that across the country."

More detail can be found on the DCSF website together with the full research report.
