Opposition growing to EU divorce reforms?
A report in the Financial Times claims that there is growing opposition to the EU's plans to implement Rome III as nation states fear being forced to enforce foreign laws that clash with their own principles. The story claims that Sweden is "leading the charge" against the proposals, objecting because the proposals would, in a number of cases, result in the application of divorce laws from the country in which the couple had their most recent residence. This could mean that Sweden would find itself enforcing Islamic divorce laws which could cut across their own principles of sexual equality.
