Second reading of Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill this week

Conservative activists urge Prime Minister to delay the Bill

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill will receive its second reading in the House of Commons on 5th February.

On Sunday, 3rd February, a letter by over 20 'senior local Conservatives' was delivered to the Prime Minister, urging him to delay consideration of the Bill until after the next General Election. The letter states:

"We feel very strongly that the decision to bring this Bill before Parliament has been made without adequate debate or consultation with either the membership of the Conservative Party or with the country at large. We are of the clear view that there is no mandate for this Bill to be passed in either the 2010 Conservative Manifesto or the 2010 Coalition Agreement."
