Heterosexual couples challenge ‘discriminatory’ bar on civil partnerships

Couples seek amendment to ‘Equal Marriage’ Bill

The Telegraph reports that four heterosexual couples are bringing a claim in the European Court of Human Rights against the United Kingdom government on the grounds that it is discriminatory to deny them the right to enter into a civil partnership.

According to The Telegraph, the couples hope that before their case reaches court, the government will allow an amendment to the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill which will permit heterosexual couples to register as civil partners.
