More than 4,000 child protection plans initiated for unborn

Mail on Sunday reports 13% increase over two years

The Mail on Sunday reports that figures released under a Freedom of Information request show that more than 4,000 child protection plans were initiated last year in England for unborn babies. This, the newspaper says, represents a 13 per cent increase over two years. The report can be read here.

The Lord Chief Justice's latest annual report shows that since 2011 the figures for children public law applications have stabilised at between 7,200-7,500 per quarter, or 30,000 per year, with the latest figures showing that there were 7,249 children involved in such applications made in the first quarter of 2013. This means that public law applications have experienced a 50% increase since 2009. Lord Judge said that this continues to present a major challenge to the judiciary in managing such an increase.
