Father hopes for ‘single parent’ surrogacy law change

BBC broadcasts interview with father in Z (A Child) case

The father who, in Z (A Child) (No 2) [2016] EWHC 1191 (Fam), won a landmark judgment declaring that sections 54(1) and 54(2) of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008 are incompatible with his and his son's rights under the ECHR, has told the BBC that he hopes he will soon be given the same rights as other parents.

The father had originally applied for a parental order in accordance with section 54 of the 2008 Act. Section 54 states that such an order can be made only on the application of 'two people'. As he is single the parental order could not be granted.

The BBC reports that the government has since confirmed that it will change the law.
