Case closure programme reduces caseload by 250,000 in last year

The Department for Work and Pensions has published statistics from the Child Support Agency on the 1993 and 2003 statutory child maintenance schemes for three months to 31 March 2017.

Case closure continues to have a big effect on the figures as more cases are closed and all new applications are now being processed on the 2012 scheme.

The proportion of cases making a contribution towards current liability in the quarter to 31 March 2017 was 90.2% (for the quarter to 31 March 2016 it was 92.1%). The number of cases contributing towards current liability in the last quarter was 125,000 (379,300). The number of cases with a current liability in the quarter was 138,600 (411,7000).  The proportion of cases paying full liability (90% or more) was 71.7% (74.3%). The number of children benefiting at quarter end was 167,200 (517,400). The maintenance collected and arranged (12 month rolling figure) £569.7m (£999.5m). Outstanding arrears were £3,240.8m (£3,708.1m).
