Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year awards announced

On 6 July the Legal Aid Practitioners Group announced the winners of its 15th Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year awards.

Winner of the award for Family Private (inc Mediation) was Mary Shaw of David Gray Solicitors. Mary, a Resolution member, recently celebrated 30 years with the firm. She trained as a collaborative family lawyer in 2006 and was involved in the first collaborative family case in the North East in 2007. In 2010 she trained as a family mediator and in 2013 became qualified to undertake direct consultation with children in mediation. She has found that she is increasingly working with clients in non-court family dispute resolution processes dealing with both children and finance issues.

The award for Family Public was won by Sheila Donn who is the managing partner of Philcox Gray and joint head of the family team. Sheila, also a Resolution member, specialises in complex care cases, particularly where children require separate representation, including cases involving adjudication on specific medical treatments. She also specialises in adoptions that are opposed or have an international element, private law children cases where parents are in high or long-term conflict regarding their children, and judicial review proceedings.

The award for Children's Rights work was given to Solange Valdez-Symonds. Solange is the supervising solicitor and director of the Project for the Registration of Children as British Citizens. She works as a solicitor for Migrants Resource Centre (MRC). Solange specialises in nationality and immigration law. She does external policy and strategic work to improve the condition and rights of migrants and their family members. Her main areas of interest are working with migrant children and children born to migrant parents, domestic violence, citizenship and legal aid.

Congratulations to them and to all the other winners of awards.
