Public Law applications data released

Cafcass publishes latest figures

The Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service has published figures for the number of care order applications received in May 2018.

These show that 1,302 applications were received in May 2018.

This is the third highest monthly total on record and the highest demand for the month of May since the records began.

(The figures are provided from the Cafcass national databases, the current electronic case management system (ECMS) and historical case management system (CMS). In public law the unit of measurement is a s.31 care application. These are counted upon receipt of the application from the court and entry into the database.)

Cafcass also collect statistics about Case duration per quarter for each Local Authority.

The target length of time for completing care and supervision (s31) cases, as set out in the Public Law Outline (PLO), is 26 weeks. The latest quarterly figures (Q4 of 2017-18) indicate the national average for the duration of care and supervision (s31) applications is 32 calendar weeks.
