Violence against women and girls from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities examined
Commons Select Committee explores factors behind violence and abuse in GRT communities
The Women and Equalities Committee has held a session examining violence against women and girls from Gypsy Roma and Traveller (GRT) communities. The session explored the factors that lead to violence and abuse in GRT communities, the barriers that women encounter when they are trying to escape abusive situations and preventative measures that can be taken to prevent abuse from occurring.
In particular, the Committee examined:
- The context in which abusive relationships may arise in GRT communities
- The barriers that GRT women face when trying to leave abusive situations
- The relationship between GRT communities and public services that deal with violence against women and girls
- The relationship between GRT women and charity and grassroots support organisations.
