Separated families in GB number 2.5 million

DWP publishes estimate for child maintenance purposes

The Department for Work and Pensions has published estimates of the separated family population in Great Britain for the period April 2014 to March 2017.

In 2016/17 there were an estimated 2.5 million separated families, including 3.9 million children.

Forty-eight per cent of separated families had a child maintenance arrangement. This proportion has fallen since 2015/16 (but the statistical significance of this change cannot be assessed as estimates are derived from various sources).

Twenty per cent of separated families had a statutory arrangement and 31 per cent had a non-statutory arrangement.
