Parents found guilty in Ireland's first FGM trial

In the Republic of Ireland a jury has found a married couple guilty of carrying out an act of female genital mutilation (FGM). The couple had pleaded not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to one count of carrying out an act of FGM on their daughter, who was then one-year-old, at a Dublin address in September, 2016. The husband and wife, who are originally from Africa, also pleaded not guilty to one count of child cruelty on the same day.

The couple were found guilty on both counts.

Judge Sheahan remanded both accused in custody and adjourned the matter for sentencing on 20 December.
