First female justice Lady Hale retires

First female justice retires, Lord Reed new Supreme Court president

Lady Hale, the first female justice, has retired.

A trailblazer for women in law, Lady Hale was one of six women studying law when she attended University out of 100, graduating with the only starred first. In 1969 she would pass her bar exam with the highest overall mark. In 2004, Lady Hale became Britain's first female law lord, in 2009 she became the first woman to serve on the UK's Supreme court before becoming its first female President in 2017.

Lady Hale hit headlines across the UK in September 2019 when the Supreme Court ruled that Prime Minister Boris Johnson's suspension of Parliament was unlawful. Much of the attention was focused on her spider brooch which inspired a fashion trend and even had it's own unofficial Twitter account.

Lord Reed is the new Supreme Court president.
