Durham Constabulary "not as effective at child protection as it could be"
Inspectorate discovers several problems in child protection services
Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) has published the results of its first inspection into Durham Constabulary's child protection services.
While the report featured a number of positive results, HMICFRS identified several inconsistencies and areas for improvement.
The report highlighted the well structured procedures for child protection matters, the good use of body worn video when responding to incidents involving risk to children and consistently good engagement with local young people and working on diverting them away from crime.
However, the report also highlighted:
- an inconsistent response to missing children
- visits of registered sex offenders going overdue or sometimes being completed by untrained officers
- a failure to collect and record information in a way that ensures a focus and understanding of childrens' needs and risks
- underdeveloped approaches to collecting performance information
