Welsh Government launches campaign explaining ban on physical punishment of children

The Welsh Government has launched an advertising claim explaining its prohibition of physical punishment of children, which will be introduced in March 2022.

From 21 March 2022 the common law defence of reasonable punishment will be abolished in Wales so it cannot be used by anyone as a defence to assault and battery against a child. It will mean children will have the same protection from assault as adults. The ban does not create a new offence. The removal of the defence of reasonable punishment will relate to both criminal and civil law.

The Welsh Government has produced an FAQ sheet and YouTube video explaining the effect of the prohibition. For the FAQ sheet, click here. To access the video, click here.
