Public Law Children cases fall in second quarter of 2010

Ministry of Justice releases court figures for second quarter of 2010

Statistics published by the Ministry of Justice show that in the second quarter of 2010 there were 6,100 children involved in public law applications, a slight drop from the 6,600 involved in the equivalent period for 2009. However, overall it maintains the higher level seen in the volume of public law applications since late 2008. At around this time there was also significant media coverage of local authority child protection practice.

There were 29,600 decrees absolute granted for the dissolution of marriage in the second quarter of 2010 (an increase of four per cent compared to the second quarter of 2009).

5,700 domestic violence orders were made in the second quarter of 2010, a drop of seven per cent on the 6,200 in the same period of last year. The number of domestic violence orders made fell between 2004 and 2008, followed by a slight rise in 2009.

There were 30,300 children involved in private law applications made in quarter 2 2010, down from the 34,500 made in the second quarter of 2009. Although the overall long-term trend for private law applications has been upward, the latest quarter's data show a return to the volume of cases seen in 2008 after being significantly higher throughout 2009.
