Divorce of Greek shipping magnate proceeds in English courts

Court of Appeal upholds Jackson J’s ruling

The Sunday Telegraph reports that Elizabeth Vardinovannis has instituted divorce proceedings against her husband, Pyrros, the Greek shipping magnate.

The report says that lawyers for Mr Vardinoyannis attempted to stop the divorce proceeding in England on the basis that his wife had not resided within the jurisdiction in the 12 months preceding the application. It was claimed that during that period she had also lived in Crete and Switzerland. Mr Vardinoyannis issued proceedings in Greece.

In the High Court, Jackson J held that the divorce could proceed in England. The husband appealed but the Court of Appeal has dismissed his appeal.
