Legal Aid Bill receives Royal Assent

Changes will be implemented from 1 April 2013

The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill (LASPO) has received Royal Assent and is now an Act of Parliament.

This means that the various changes to the scope, eligibility and other aspects of the legal aid scheme are now law. They are due to be implemented on 1 April 2013.

The Legal Services Commission will be replaced by the Legal Aid Agency, which will be an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Justice.

The enacted legislation can be accessed here.
